12.31.2007 | New Years Resolutions 2008
Happy 2008, Everyone!
I’m not normally a fan of resolutions. They’re just added pressure that I typically don’t feel like dealing with. This year, though, for one reason or another, I feel compelled to make some. The plan is to keep them as general and time-insensitive as possible, but I’m an idealist and a dreamer, so they’ll probably end up being far too lofty for my own good. Nevertheless, here goes my list of resolutions:
Dematerialize.
I have a ton of stuff. Too much stuff. And it’s just that: stuff. My room is 30% wires, 30% clothes, 30% books and other reading materials and 10% miscellaneous nonsense. There’s just no need for it. Considering I’ve only spent a collective 2 months in my room in NJ this year, there really is no need for me to hold onto a lot of the stuff in it. I obviously don’t need it if I can go 10 months without it. The only problem is that a good portion of it is sentimental-type things. Trophies from high school, mementos from different adventures, and the like. I can’t bear to part with some of it. I’m finally getting to the point where I’m ready to ditch some of my old HS t-shirts and things, but how I’m going to tear myself away from a lot of the other stuff remains to be seen.
Focus.
This may seem kind of obvious, but I’m relatively unfocused compared to my former self. I used to be able to handle a million things without letting a single one slip. I still can for the most part, but I’m finding that now that many of the things I have to juggle require a great deal of effort and attention, it’s more difficult to handle all sorts of auxiliary responsibilities on top of them. Part of this effort is my decision not to T.A. any courses this semester. Considering I’ve T.A.’ed a total of 8 or so courses in the last 3 semesters, this is going to be a huge time saver for me. It should hopefully give me time to focus on things that I’m even more passionate about. I’ve done a good deal of focusing myself this past semester and I intend to continue on that path. It’s been such a relief to remove myself from a lot of clubs and things that I was only attending out of obligation rather than sincere interest. I’ve always been involved in billions of things at the same time, but I think I’m at the point where I’d like to focus in on a few and really devote myself to those.
Explore.
This seems kind of contrarian to the above resolution, but I think they work quite well together. The time I’ll free by focusing will allow me to explore new things. Explore also means to take some risks and try things I wouldn’t otherwise do. I did this my senior year of high school and it was incredibly rewarding. I hope to do this again and step out of my comfort zone. My comfort zone has expanded a great deal since high school, so finding something that I’m not comfortable doing is getting to be more and more difficult, but I think I’ll manage to find something that fits the bill.
Improve.
I have a lot of random skills that have been laying dormant in these past years that I’ve really missed. I miss playing the violin, volleyball, and soccer. I miss being really good at coding. I’m kind of falling behind in that respect and I’d really like to catch up to speed again. I’ve always wanted to learn to play the piano and to dance. I want to step out of my design comfort zone more often and make things that don’t scream “Jenn made this” all the time. It’s one thing to have a signature look, it’s another be to stuck in a design rut. I want to rediscover my “master of time management” self and get reacquainted. I want my photographs to be of National Geographic quality. I want to rediscover the wonders of pencil and paper, both in terms of writing and sketching. We’ve been apart for far too long. I want to get back to my former level of Spanish fluency. Most of all, though, I want to improve my followthrough. I want to make all of these goals into a reality.
So that’s my mission for 2008. 2007 was my best year ever in terms of the success of this blog and my posting frequency. I’ve posted 96 times so far this year, beating my all-time high of 57 in 2002. I’d like to think they’ve been better quality posts and posts worth looking back on. I hope to up my game even more next year.
Thanks to everyone who has been following along with my adventures this year and even more thanks to those who made those adventures possible. I hope you’ll stick around for 2008. It’s been a pleasure sharing my life with you this past year and I look forward to sharing what’s to come. If 2007 is any indication of what my life is going to bring, it’s going to be one heck of a ride!
Until next time…
Cheers!
12.27.2007 | A Look Back At 2007
2007 has been one of the best years of my life. I thought that I’d take a look back at the year and all of the great adventures I’ve had.
As A Photographer:
- I had a photo I edited featured on the Yahoo! Earth Day website.
- I got my first photo on the cover of the Cornell Daily Sun.
- I made staff at The Sun a month later.
- I found my photo used in David Skorton’s biography on Wikipedia.
- I photographed Sandra Day O’Connor at a lecture during her visit to Cornell.
- I photographed Bob Woodward during a lecture he gave at Ithaca College.
- I photographed a bunch of other cool people as a Senior Photographer for The Sun.
As A Cornellian:
- I reveled in the freedom of the first Cornell Snow Day in many, many years.
- I developed a group project that brought in thousands of visitors from around the world overnight.
- I took advantage of a beautiful Ithaca spring.
As An Intern:
- I was offered an internship at Yahoo!.
- I went to California for the first time.
- I went hiking and surfing all in the same weekend.
- I recorded a podcast with other interns about music.
- My roommate and I fought a slug and won.
- I learned to live like a Californian.
As A Chef:
- I finally learned to cook!
- I hosted a dinner party for friends.
- I made a huge mess in an attempt to cook the perfect meal with my friend April.
Just As Me:
- I turned 21.
- I went to WordCamp.
- I discovered that there is a perfect job for me.
- My childhood dream came true when I got tickets to the Spice Girls concert for Feb ‘08.
All in all, I’d say this has been a pretty successful year. I’ve done things I’d never dreamed of doing and I’ve met a lot of really amazing people along the way. I hope 2008 brings this much excitement and adventure!
12.13.2007 | Home for the Holidays
Though my semester isn’t completely over, I made the leap and decided to come home early and finish my work from New Jersey. Part of it was I was getting to be far too A.D.D. in Ithaca, the weather is supposed to be terrible tomorrow (the day I had originally planned to come home), and a lot of the books I thought of referencing for my Culture, Law, & Politics of the Internet paper were sitting on my bookshelf here. So after sleeping for about 4 hours on Tuesday night and staying up until about 2AM last night to work on as much of my paper as possible and pack up my room, I decided to wake up at 5AM today with the goal of being on the road by 6. I ended up being a bit delayed because I had to do things like dishes and make sure all of the perishable items in my cabinet were properly pawned off onto the roommates. I also had to clean out Sir Fincent’s tank. RIP Sir Fincent.
I left Ithaca around 7AM. It was still dark out. And snowing. And raining. I basically drove through every sort of precipitation imaginable. It wasn’t too bad until I started to get sleepy somewhere in Pennsylvania. I also had my music to keep me awake. I bought an iTrip Tuesday night so that I didn’t have to spend my entire ride fiddling with the “Scan” button on the radio. All you ever get is static, country, or more static. Oh, and NPR.
So I made it home, left everything in my car but my laptop, walked into my room and promptly fell asleep. I could only afford an hour’s nap though. I had a 15-page paper due at midnight. I managed to get it done - at 11:48PM. It’s not too bad, if I do say so myself, but I guess we’ll just have to wait until grades are released to see how my professor liked it. For some reason, all of my final projects/exams this semester are following the same path: I’m very reluctant to start them, once I do start, it’s slow going, and then all of a sudden a spark goes off and I’m off, typing away at a mile a minute. I’ve actually really enjoyed all of my final exam/paper work this semester. That never happens. I have 2 papers left: one, a group paper for my HCI project and the other, a paper on using a wiki as a course supplement which involves me actually setting up the infrastructure for a wiki to be beta tested this summer. That’s all due on Friday.
The good news is though, I’ve over the hump. I only have the easy stuff left and then, after Friday, I’m FREE! I haven’t been free since December of last year! It’s quite a liberating feeling. I have no idea what I’m going to do with all of my time, but if I manage to stick to the to do list I made for myself, it will involve learning Processing, Arduino, ActionScript, possibly some AJAX, and fleshing out jennvargas.com to include some more portfolio-type things.
Apart from that, I’ll be continuing my internship search and hopefully seeing some friends from high school. That’s between doing all of the holiday-type things, of course. Speaking of which, I really need to get a move on with my Christmas shopping! I’m cutting the “we guarantee arrival by Christmas” deadline kind of close! Oh, and I’ll also be blogging, since I’ll (finally) have a lot of time on my hands!
Until next time…
12.09.2007 | Christmas Wishlist
In an attempt to take a break from my hours of paper-writing, I thought I would write a bit about what’s on my Christmas wishlist this year. This has been, by far, one of the most difficult years in terms of actually coming up with a list. I’m at the point where I don’t play with toys, I don’t really need any housewares yet, and I have my own money to buy things when I want them. Most things I want/need are either utilitarian or online things that you can’t really wrap in wrapping paper. Most unfortunately, too, is the fact that most of the things on my geek wishlist are either things that are super expensive or things that I’ve already bought. It’s a pretty boring list this year, except for the Crumpler bag.
Crumpler: The Keystone

Now that I have my Canon 40D and a respectable number of lenses, it’s time for me to upgrade my camera bag. Also key in this decision is the fact that my 40D doesn’t fit in my current camera bag. Crumplers are incredibly sturdy and this bag has all of the nooks and crannies I need to keep my lenses safe and happy. Despite the hefty $200 price tag, I decided to go for the backpack
for purely ergonomic reasons. I already carry a Timbuk2 Artist Series messenger bag and another messenger bag just wouldn’t work. A backpack would distribute the weight of the camera and lenses and my back will thank me.
incase iPod Touch Cover
I’ve been waiting for a cover for my iPod Touch for a long time now! It took forever for companies to come out with my favorite silicon skins! incase finally got the hint! I was so excited to find one I sent the link to my mom right away. I’d like the case in pink, but anything but yellow will do! While I’d prefer it to cost far less than $29.95, at this point, beggars can’t be choosers! I’m still debating whether or not I want to put an invisishield on the front like I have on my Blackberry, but for now it’s the scratches on the back that worry me.
Wii Play

After having my Wii for just about a year (although I only really use it when I’m home) and playing around with different games, my absolute favorites are still Wii Sports games that came with the system. They use the controllers as they’re meant to be used. The games are so much more interactive and fun. Wii Play
looks like it’s right up my alley and would probably make it onto my very, very short list of favorite games. If it’s in my stocking, you can be sure that the after-effects will rear their ugly heads again.
Hairspray: Shake & Shimmy Edition

To those who know me, it’s no secret that I’m a fan of musicals. My roommate Margot so bravely accompanied to see Hairspray when they played it in our campus theater. It is, by far, the best musical I’ve seen in a long time. Lucky for her, Thanksgiving break was only a few days away. Unlucky for her, Hairspray has been released in a two-disc Shake & Shimmy Edition
that supposedly teaches you the steps to some of the dances in the movie. You can rest assured that if this movie is in my stocking, once I’ve gotten over the aforementioned after-effects, I will be shimmying my way through the dances on this DVD and will be dedicating it all to Margot and her bravery ;).
Other Things
I’ve been on a mission to make purchasing music and movies a habit. I’ve subscribed to Netflix and have been getting most of my TV shows and music either through Amazon mp3, iTunes, or ABC’s wonderful free player (I have an abundance of love for ABC and how much easier they make my life). It’s actually quite liberating not to have the fear of the RIAA or MPAA knocking at your door. Movies and music are getting so cheap now that I really don’t see a reason to try any other means. Though my bank account has been taking a bit of a hit lately, I like not paying fines. I like not getting in trouble ;).
To fund my movie and music listening habits, I would like an iTunes gift card and some months worth of a Netflix subscription so I don’t have to shell out the $9 every month. Luckily, my flickr account has been extended until March or April, so I won’t have to worry about that for a few more months. I’m still looking forward to the day they make lifetime subscriptions available.
While I’d still love the Dell 30″ flat panel from my geek wishlist, they’re coming out with a new one soon and I’d rather wait for the upgrade.
So that’s that. A pretty mellow wish list this year. There are a few other books, but there’s really no need to go into those here. If you’re really all that interested, it’s all on Amazon. What’s on your wish list this holiday season?
12.01.2007 | Snowman Poop: How To
I can’t tell how many hits I’ve gotten on searches for “snowman poop”. All from an entry I wrote back in my senior year of high school. Many of those hits are promptly followed by an email asking for more detail. So here it is, once and for all, the story of Snowman Poop.
As President of my high school Student Council back in 2004-2005, one of the ridiculous ideas I had was to use snowman poop as our holiday “candygram”/fundraiser. After convincing the administration that it was completely harmless (it helps when you’re on good terms with them to begin with), we got to work.
It was an incredibly simple fundraiser. Basically, you filled out the order form which asked for your name (if could be anonymous) and the name and homeroom of the person you wanted to send it to and paid for your poop. Then on delivery day, we would bring it to that person’s homeroom. Our supplies consisted of:
- Lots and LOTs of bags of mini marshmallows
- mini snack bags (they’re about 3″x6″)
- ribbon
- hole punchers
- printer paper
- a printer
- plastic sanitary gloves
- red pens
We decided on 12 marshmallows per bag. I think our logic was the 12 days of Christmas? I can’t really remember that part, but it was enough to look like the bag was full without going overboard. We printed, cut, and hole punched the tags for the bags which had the following poem and an accompanying clip art of a snowman:
“We heard you’ve been naughty
so here’s the scoop:
For the holidays this year,
you’re getting snowman poop!”
Then came the fun part. Stuffing the bags.
It took our council of about 14 people (I think?) about 2-3 days to stuff them all, spending about 4 hours/day. It was a bit of an assembly line process: a few people stuffed, a few people tied the ribbons and tags around, 2 people wrote the names and homerooms on the tags, and another organized them into paper bags to be delivered to the homerooms.
We sold them for $0.50. A dollar would have been far too expensive, and the low cost really drove up sales. Some homeroom teachers bought them for their entire homerooms. It went over extremely well - if memory serves correctly, we raised over $3,000, which is the equivalent of over 6,000 orders of poop in a school of about 3,500 students. On the last school day before winter break, we donned santa or elf hats or reindeer antlers and delivered them to each homeroom. They were a hit. Let me tell you - it was absolutely hysterical hearing the principal and superintendent talk about poop. I still laugh about it today.
So there you have it, the story of snowman poop. Good luck with your marshmallow endeavors. That word was banned from our meetings for the rest of the year. Too many marshmallows for one lifetime. Enjoy!
