None of what you wrote strikes me as a good thing. Do you think 20th century students were slacking off, or something? Based on the continually lowered academic standards in colleges, I'd guess not. But I agree with your empirical observations. People here seem "too busy" to actually listen in class, too, and are constantly sitting in class typing away at their laptops. College kids too busy to be in college. It all strikes me as a bit self-important, though. Technology is supposed to make life easier, not enable us to all turn into hyper active posers, constantly checking our mobile e-mail as if we're Fortune 500 CEOs. I think one of the downsides of constant connectivity is that it creates as much work as it saves, as the cheapness of the medium has caused us to lose the ability to communicate efficiently. For every new form of always-there communication we acquire, we just start chattering more to fill it. God forbid we should control the technology, instead of the other way around. Perhaps I'm a bit of a curmudgeon, but when college students appear to be more busy than heart surgeons, it all seems a bit silly.
