07.30.2008 | the reconnecting continues
Last week I wrote about an 8-year search coming to a close with the help of some Googling and perseverance. I finally found Clare and got in touch with her.
Well it gets better.
Today I got an email through the contact form I put up a few days ago:

This morning the Internet finally came through for me.
For some backgruond, Clare is a girl that my mom and I hosted back when I was 12 or so through a program called Project Children. The program brings young kids from Northern Ireland to the US for the summer where they can experience a “normal childhood” for a summer away from all of the “troubles”. It was one of the best summers of my life. Clare and I kept in touch through letters and things for a few years after she left, but sometime around the start of high school, we lost touch. I’ve been trying to find her ever since.

As much as I’d like to deny it, I still have one year left of school and that year begins in just over a month. Ick.
On one hand, I’m really not looking forward to leaving San Francisco again and heading back to Ithaca where it’s cold, dreary, and miserable. Don’t get me wrong, I like Cornell. I even miss it a little. But the sheer thought of having to battle it out with the weather, (some) of the people, and then academics? It’s just not appealing to me this time around. I want to go back and see my friends and get back to work on the Sun, but everything else? No thanks.

Some offices require expensive video game systems or spa treatments to keep their employees sane. FlickrHQ is a bit different. Early this week we got a a package full of Flickr-colored inner tubes left over from an event in Spain. THANK YOU, SPAIN! Chaos ensued from the moment we opened the packages!
It started out very simple: “ohhh look inner tubes! Let’s try to use them as a Skip It or try to roll them down the hall”, but then creativity kicked in and soon all 8 tubes were inflated and used as everything from chairs to battle weapons to running obstacles, costumes and crash mats. Thus, the Flickrlympics began.
