changing directions
Up until now this blog has been about “what the heck am I going to do with my life?!” There have been countless posts about my journey from wanting to be a biologist, a chemist, a linguistics major, the list goes on. Luckily, for the past few years, I’ve had the opportunity to try on some different careers and slowly make my way towards finding the ideal one. This summer, in particular, was really helpful as the Flickr team let me try on some roles outside of my actual internship. One of those was as a Product Manager for some Facebook integration that you can see in both the Flickr and Facebook’s new designs. I had a blast and learned a LOT. It was the first time I’d found a position where I was really challenged in ways that I could see myself enjoying in the future.
I got this in the mail today:
It’s an offer for a position as a Product Manager at Yahoo! I’m super excited because it means that the future I’ve been envisioning for myself – the one that involves me getting a great job at a tech company, moving out to San Francisco, and letting my true geek colors shine – now has a chance of becoming a reality.
With this offer, I’ve also gained a lot of perspective on things. Mostly, it made me realize that I’m graduating relatively soon and need to get my act together. Things like car insurance, health insurance, taxes, and all of the nitty gritty that comes along with being a full-fledged adult are not too far away. I am really excited to be moving out on my own into my own apartment and things though! Needless to say, despite the subhead on this blog, I’m no longer “in search of my future” but rather on the cusp of it. It’s craaaaazzzzzyyy, eh?
Congrats Jenn!
Pretty cool Jenn, congrats! I remember mine, the yodal when you open it was so cool (I think I may even have my original box somewhere). Sadly my license plate frame got smashed:

Our first attempt to recruit Jenn to Yahoo didn’t go quite as well, but it was also captured on video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dtBUou69SQ
